Galveston’s Annual Bird Migration

Posted by Marilyn Swanson on
 March 1, 2017

Galveston Island experiences an annual bird migration. The birds will change residences twice a year. Every Spring millions of birds who have become our Winter residents migrate back to the north. This journey takes several weeks. They will spend the Summer months in the milder areas of North America. As Fall approaches these same migrant birds fly south to enjoy the mild Winters of the Gulf Coast. Bird migration is a cycle that repeats itself each year. Not all birds migrate, however, many do.

Galveston Island also is home to another group of migrant birds. This group will fly south each Fall into Mexico, Central America, and some into South America. Then they return each Spring to a milder and cooler Gulf Coast. This natural phenomenon or bird migration has been repeating itself for thousands of years. All indications are that no change is in order for these migratory birds.

Bird Migration White PelicansBecause of this unique characteristic, Galveston Island has long been considered one of the finest locations in North America to enjoy Birding. Hundreds of bird species make the journey to and from Galveston each year. Because of this, we receive thousands of visitors who enjoy watching the migratory birds in their natural habitat.

Some special events such as Featherfest 2017 actually cater to the folks who actively appreciate and watch the bird migration for personal enjoyment and education. Many naturalists and photographers are eager to participate in Featherfest as well. Two different groups of birds make room for each other with their timely migration. As one group moves out another group moves in. Then six months later they change roles and living locations. Most of our migratory creatures travel thousands of miles each year chasing their preferred weather conditions. Opting for mild and pleasant weather is not unlike humans in that regard. Most of us would prefer not to live in harsh weather or uncomfortable climatic conditions either. You know what they say “Birds of a Feather”.
